Housing starts up in April Print

The housing construction industry continue to strengthen in Clarington, as housing starts in April rose 155 percent over the same period last year.

According to preliminary data released by the the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) today, a total of 51 housing starts were recorded in Clarington during April, 2010, compared to just 20 last year for the same month.

Of these starts, 43 were for single homes, while 8 were apartments.

Similar figures were recorded for surrounding areas, particularly in Oshawa, which saw housing starts rise from 12 last April to 116 this April.

"As prices for new homes across the GTA continue to rise higher, more households will be challenged to buy homes in relatively expensive submarkets, and therefore will look into more affordable areas such as Oshawa (and Clarington). Data suggests that among recent purchasers in Oshawa, larger single-detached homes are particularly in demand," says Inna Breidburg, CMHC's Market Analyst.
