Improvements to Clarington waste pickup PDF Print E-mail

Clarington residents will now be able to easily get rid of unwanted toilets and televisions, thanks to changes in Durham Region's curbside collection program.

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department has enhanced its residential curbside collection program to include electronics and porcelain bathroom fixtures, along with metal goods.

Effective Feb. 13, in the Municipality of Clarington and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, the existing call-in service for metal goods will be expanded to include electronics and porcelain bathroom fixtures. In addition, this new service level removes any limits for the collection of these items. The current call-in service for bulky goods, also at 1-800-667-5671, will remain as a bi-weekly service, with a maximum of two items per collection date.

Electronics include items such as computer equipment, televisions, phones, photocopiers, calculators, DVD and Blu-ray players™, home theatre systems and stereos. Porcelain bathroom fixtures include items such as toilets, bidets, sinks and bath tubs. Metal goods include items such as household appliances, metal furniture (e.g. patio furniture and bed frames), barbecues, swing sets, hot water tanks and furnaces.

"Last year, the Durham Waste Management Centre received more than 800 calls about the disposal of old toilets alone," said Mirka Januszkiewicz, Director of Waste Management. "These changes will increase the waste diversion efforts in Durham, while making valuable materials, such as scrap metal, less available to scavengers. We thank local residents for their co-operation in helping Durham Region move closer to achieving a goal of 70 per cent waste diversion."
